“Espero estar errado”, escreveu o general Mike Minihan, que chefia o Comando de Mobilidade Aérea, à liderança de seus cerca de 110.000 membros. “Meu instinto me diz que vou lutar em 2025.”

As opiniões do general não representam o Pentágono, mas mostram preocupação nos mais altos escalões militares dos EUA sobre uma possível tentativa da China de exercer controle sobre Taiwan, que a China reivindica como território. Tanto os Estados Unidos quanto Taiwan realizarão eleições presidenciais em 2024, potencialmente criando uma oportunidade para a China realizar uma ação militar, escreveu Minihan.
“Esses comentários não são representativos da visão do departamento sobre a China”, disse uma autoridade de defesa dos EUA.
O secretário de Defesa dos EUA, Lloyd Austin , disse no início deste mês que duvidava seriamente que o aumento das atividades militares chinesas perto do Estreito de Taiwan fosse um sinal de uma invasão iminente da ilha por Pequim.
A China intensificou sua pressão diplomática, militar e econômica nos últimos anos na ilha autogovernada para aceitar o governo de Pequim. O governo de Taiwan diz que quer a paz, mas se defenderá se for atacado.
