Cerca de 1,5 milhão de novos casos de covid-19 foram registrados em todo o mundo entre 10 de julho e 6 de agosto – um aumento de 80% em relação ao período anterior. Durante os mesmos 28 dias, o vírus causou ainda 2,5 mil mortes – uma queda de 57% em relação ao período anterior. Os dados são da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). 
Os números mostram que, enquanto diversos países registraram queda de novos casos e de óbitos provocados pela doença, a região do Pacífico Ocidental identificou aumento de novas infecções em meio a uma redução nos óbitos. Desde o dia 6 de agosto, mais de 769 milhões de casos foram reportados globalmente, além de cerca de 6,9 milhões de mortes.
“Atualmente, os casos relatados não representam com precisão as taxas de infecção devido à redução de testes e relatórios globalmente. Durante esse período de 28 dias, 44% (103 de 234) dos países relataram pelo menos um caso à OMS – uma proporção que vem diminuindo desde meados de 2022”, destacou a entidade em comunicado.
